Introducing Spectrum Studio: Cinematic Motion Control for Broadcast

Motion control has long been used in filmmaking to create smooth, repeatable camera movement - especially for VFX and high-end production. Large broadcast studios have also used motion control for years, enabling automated moves, repeatable segments, and leaner crews.

But most broadcast environments today rely on PTZ cameras - great for live framing and repositioning, but not designed for cinematic motion.

At the same time, cinema cameras and lenses are increasingly being adopted across broadcast, from NFL productions to houses of worship.

Spectrum Studio brings true, scalable motion control to this new reality.

Built specifically for broadcast environments, Spectrum Studio delivers cinematic motion, repeatable automation, and robotic dolly movement at a price and level of accessibility that makes it practical for studios of all sizes.

Once you understand what scalable true motion control can bring to your broadcast and how easy and affordable it is to get, your first purchase of the Spectrum Studio won't be your last.

You may be wondering - What makes Spectrum Studio different?

Spectrum Studio is Different

Why Spectrum Studio Is Different from Traditional Broadcast Robotics

Traditional broadcast robotic camera systems are powerful - but they can also be extremely expensive, proprietary and complex to deploy.

Spectrum Studio takes a different approach.

Lower Cost, Scalable Systems

The most immediate difference is cost. Studios can typically purchase two or more complete Spectrum Studio dolly systems for the price of a single competing broadcast robotics system.

This dramatically lowers the barrier to adding cinematic motion to studio production in an expandable way.

Installation and Setup

Many traditional broadcast robotic systems require manufacturer installation that can take multiple days.

Spectrum Studio was designed differently from the start. Coming from the independent creator and filmmaking world, eMotimo systems prioritize ease of setup and usability. A basic Spectrum Studio system can be running in minutes and fully operational within a couple hours.

No Licensing or Hidden Fees

Spectrum Studio firmware updates are free and there are no obligations to pay licensing fees, or support fees to use the product to its fullest.

Open Ecosystem (No Lock-In)

Some manufacturers attempt to lock you into their proprietary ecosystem. Only after building out a complete system do you see where they make their money.  For example, want to get to a 5 axis system with Pan/Tilt/Slide/Focus/Zoom, you might be locked into buying of their proprietary FIZ motors or track add thousands to the overall cost of the system.

eMotimo has taken an different approach and integrated to common FIZ motors and dolly systems that you may already own, or can purchase for reasonable prices.

Additionally, we have opened our systems for control from free solutions like Bitfocus Companion as well as Skaarhoj - both leveraging a free API that is open and flexible for technical users to create new ways to control and queue the Spectrum Studio.

Unlimited Dolly Length

Traditional sliders are limited by belts.

Spectrum Studio’s beltless dolly system uses sensor-based tracking, allowing dolly runs as long as your track allows

If a studio wants to expand their setup later, they can simply add more track. This level of flexibility is unheard of in the broadcast space.

Why Spectrum Studio Is Different from PTZ Cameras

PTZ cameras are built for remote live control from static positions.

They’re excellent for:

  • Reframing shots
  • Recalling presets
  • Live operation

But the your camera is stationary. movement between presets is typically fast and mechanical, meaning you only cut to the camera once it stops.

Spectrum Studio improves that incorporates Dolly motion to your rig and coordinates all of the those control axis together (pan/tilt/dolly/focus/zoom).

With eMotimo's cinematic presets, operators can set targets (presets) with timing and damping. When recalled by a press of a button, instead of just repositioning, the Studio uses it motion control engine to hit its targets cinematically over extended times producing footage worth cutting to - even while moving.

Spectrum Studio also brings looping automation, allowing cameras to continuously repeat moves so they’re always delivering dynamic shots when called upon.

With live control, available dolly control, cinematic presets, and looping, the new Spectrum Studio is brings cinematic camera moves with automation to your broadcast.

By the way, if you love your PTZ’s image quality and easy of use, but feel you are missing out with cinematic dolly motion, check out our PTZ Mover line.

Why Spectrum Studio Is Different from Prosumer Motion Control

Many motion control systems exist in the $1K - $5K range, but they’re not built for broadcast environments.

Spectrum Studio bridges that gap.

Supports Real Broadcast Cameras

With 15 lbs of usable payload, Spectrum Studio supports a wide range of cameras and lenses that can fit into your broadcast environment.

Scales Beyond Short Sliders

Consumer systems are typically limited to 2–5 ft sliders. This might work great for product shooting or tabletop interview shots, options quickly become limited when you consider front of stage, edge of balcony, and front of control booth positions. 10, 20, or even 50 feet of track becomes a requirement, and is an affordable option with our beltess integration systems to Dana Dolly or RigWheels products.

Wired Network Control

Most consumer based products either omit network control entirely or focus on inexpensive and saturated 2.4Ghz Wifi for communication. Spectrum Studio includes a built-in wired network port where reliability isn’t an option.

This allows integration with professional broadcast control systems such as:

  • Skaarhoj controllers
  • Bitfocus Companion
  • Our Open API and future eMotimo control hardware

Wired network control makes Spectrum Studio ready to integrate into robust automated production environments.

Why Is Spectrum Studio Different from Spectrum ST4/ST4.3

While Spectrum Studio is built on the same platform as the Spectrum ST4/ST4.3, it introduces several features specifically designed for broadcast production.

Built-In Network Port

Spectrum Studio includes a native Ethernet port for network control and broadcast system integration.

Native Beltless Dolly Support

The system is designed to work directly with eMotimo’s beltless dolly integrations, simplifying setup for studio slider and track systems.

Broadcast-Focused Software

The software has been redesigned specifically for studio workflows and is currently being developed to support Power-On Positioning to help save time after power cycles especially for instances where you have multiple motorized camera positions.

Bringing Cinematic Motion to Broadcast

Spectrum Studio bridges the gap between broadcast camera robotics and cinematic motion control.

It delivers smooth, repeatable camera movement, flexible automation, and professional control system integration - all in a system designed to be easy to install and operate.

For studios ready to add dynamic, cinematic motion - without the cost and complexity of traditional broadcast robotics - Spectrum Studio offers a smarter, more accessible path forward.

Introducing Spectrum Studio: Cinematic Motion Control for Broadcast

Motion control has long been used in filmmaking to create smooth, repeatable camera movement. But in broadcast studios, camera motorization has traditionally meant PTZ cameras designed for live framing, not cinematic motion.

Spectrum Studio changes that.

Built specifically for broadcast environments, Spectrum Studio brings cinematic motion control, repeatable automation, and robotic dolly movement to studios at a price and level of accessibility that hasn’t existed before.
